South Korean Casinos Attract Macau VIPs With Innovative Offers
The anti-corruption crackdown on Macau’s gambling industry has driven away most of the VIP and high-stake gamblers from the Cotai strip.
These VIP gamblers were initially waiting for the Chinese government to relax their anti-corruption crackdown before getting back to the casino tables.
Ever since the Chinese government confirmed that they would not change their stance on Macau, these VIP gamblers have preferred to travel neighbouring countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines where the gambling laws are a lot more relaxed.
South Korea has realized the market potential from the VIP and high-stake gamblers and are now designing specific advertising campaigns to lure Macau’s gamblers to South Korean casinos. Chinese law does not permit gambling companies to advertise their services but casinos in South Korean have come up with innovative marketing strategies which include free air tickets to persuade these VIP gamblers to visit South Korea. Extravagant offers also include lower tax rates and the use of a personal jet.
In a statement, Lee Hyuk-Byung, vice chairman of Paradise said
Premium mass players can be recognized as VIP players and treated better than in Macau. We have other attractions in Korea such as culture, fashion, food.
Macau being the gambling hub of the world offered VIP treatment to players who could spend around $500,000. South Korean casinos are prepared to offer VIP treatment to customers who are willing to spend just $50,000.
Client managers from the Paradise Casino frequently fly to different parts of China and specifically target these VIP gamblers who have either been recommended by a previous client or have an established reputation for being a high stakes player. These Chinese gamblers are targeted and offered a number of perks to come and play in South Korea. Some of the perks currently being offered include free tours in South Korea with a Mandarin speaking guide, appointments with some of the top plastic surgeons in South Korean and a girl friend experience with a Korean model or actress.
These stealth marketing tactics have come to the attention of the Chinese authorities who have promised to target and take strict action against these companies who are trying to lure Chinese gamblers overseas. The Chinese government has asked Macau to change its image from being a gambling paradise to a destination that promotes culture, education and cuisine.
This drastic change will result in a major collapse of the gambling market and South Korea wants to ensure they benefit from the influx of Chinese gamblers.
